Accuracy and energy quickly trump pellet shape on this game and JSBs are good stuff. Exacts or Monsters if your gun likes them. Last, source JSBs, they are the standard most go by. Get anywhere near supersonic and noise is a huge issue. Wast fast stuff like 177 or even lightish pellets in heavier calibers. Trajectories and FPE are what it’s about and steady velocity over a shot string with enough FPE to kill reliably is what you want. The velocity drop off was extreme though and that’s the game with air. It’s been 8 years since I really had anything to do with air guns. CO2 has weird velocity drop offs when outdoor temps go below 50 degrees of memory serves. It wasn’t nearly as hard hitting as I’d want for small game really.

Much like a 2240/50 I’m regards to the crazy mods you can do. I had a smithed QB78 CO2 with shroud/air stripper. Pneumatics like PCP, multipump, or CO2 aren’t sensitive to hold or scope eaters. I’ve head the TX is much less so but it’s a beast weight wise and isn’t a cheap gun either. You’ll also need to learn Artillery Hold as many Springers are hold sensitive. They’ll kill a centerfire scope in short order. Just remember, if you go with something like a Springer (Diana RWS, AA TX200, etc) you will need a specific scope designed for the reverse recoil. Benjamin Marauders with hand pumps are the budget version of this setup but no comparison to a nice PCP. A tank and hand pump (arms if steel pumping 4500 psi for every ten shots) is $5-700, a shoebox compressor is over $1k. Think new Evanix and Daystate models are $1200+ on the low and double in the high side. An air stripper shroud is essentially a quieter suppressor but no tax stamp required. 22 version has been used by a few I know to kill probably hundreds of feral hogs.

PCPs can be tuned easily to reduce power and smooth repeatable shot velocity or can be cranked to get a handful of full power shots before velocity craters each fill. Real nice, real accurate, real expensive. If you really hate the squirrels you could get a Daystate or Evanix, a carbon fiber refill tank, etc. Side rockers and thumb rockers are more desirable than newer versions and I didn’t like the idea of holding Shen a thumb rocker safety as I fired each shot. When I got into PCP guns I decided to track down a more desirable version. I think they’ve discontinued these a few years or a decade back. I worked at Crosman in 2001 on the line that hand made these albeit the more cost cut streamlined version. Won’t break my heart to keep it and start shooting it either.
